Enlisting and Providing Support

I am excited to be presenting my advocacy plan soon to the Childhood Obesity Taskforce meeting in my county. My advocacy plan is to educate parents, teachers, and community partners in my community about the importance of fighting childhood obesity through making better nutritional choices and exercise. We use a program called I Am Moving, I Am Learning (IMIL) at the Head Start program that I work at as a teacher. This program is an initiative of the Office of Head Start designed to address childhood obesity through increasing physical activity and encouraging healthy food choices. I would like advice from my colleagues about my presentation. Should I make handouts to go along with the presentation as a visual? I also wanted feedback about doing a song and dance with one of our "Choosy Cd's". Should I involve the audience to actively participate? If anyone has any helpful information or resources to share I would greatly appreciate them to help further my information on this subject. I have found several that was beneficial to my efforts. I used this one for my main presentation: http://www.choosykids.com/ and http://www.letsmove.gov/eat-healthy and http://www.letsmove.gov/get-active.

  1. Invloving the audiance is a great way of demonstrating what you believe needs more attention. As the audiance participate they will also see and feel why excersizing at a young age can benifit their health. Also handing out healthy recipies can be benificial to your audance, so they can see first hand what a healthy meal consists of.

  3. You seem like you are getting things together very well for your presentation. I believe it would be a good idea to have handouts available, so people can go back and lookm at them later, and they can als0 give them to others so they can get on board with your advocacy effort.

  4. This plan sounds really good. I think that addressing childhood obesity is an important section in society today. I am shocked at the fact that I can go into a neighborhood where I know children are and do not see any one outside. I think that making exercise and play an essential in school is exactly what many schools need. I will be checking out your websites to see what I can use in my own classroom. Thanks!!!

  6. I copied my whole powerpoint so that the audience could look back at it and my internet sites and book was on the powerpoint too. This was the best way so they could go back and see where they could help in advocacy efforts too. The parents from there are very glad that I will be using the summer camp that is run at the school throughout the summer to show their kids the powerr and enjoyment of music. I will be donating 2 fridays to their center which are the days I do not work for my camp.
I am so glad you are usinghttp://www.letsmove.gov/eat-healthy and http://www.letsmove.gov/get-active. Our First Lady is so involved with this and has been doing a good job at getting the word out to the parents and administrators.
Thanks for your support in my plans, it has been great having the feedback from you.
